As Father passed away on 9 May 2007, the Trust will cease appealing for donations. All  donations now held in the Fund will be utilized as a Scholarship according to the Trust’s objective.

An Introduction to the Trust

After serving more than 40 years in Hong Kong, Father Deane retired to Ireland in 1997.  His retirement was well provided for by the Salesian Society. But as he was suffering from Parkinson's Disease his communication with the outside world was very limited, especially in Ireland where he was virtually a stranger.  He had led a quiet and rather lonely life in a nursing home in Dublin and as the Parkinson's Disease progressed he was no longer able to take care of himself in daily tasks.

In 1999, after two years of close monitering of Father's situation and conditions, we, a group of St Louis Old Boys and friends of Father Deane in Sydney, offered our assistance by making suggestions as well as limited personal contributions to Father Deane's healthcare and day-to-day needs.

In the year 2000, in order to broaden the resources for Father Deane's daily as well as emergency medical needs, we offered our time and effort to spearhead and coordinate efforts from all those St Louis Old Boys who wanted to help to improve the quality of life for Father Deane - so that he could enjoy more of whatever years left ahead of him.

It was based on this objective of helping fellow Salesians that we established a Trust Fund in 2000 in Father's name to cater for the expenses for some additional care that he needed.

Father Deane was already well looked after by the Salesians, why did we established a fund to see to his needs?

Follow the life of Father Deane, through the letters of his friends and Old Boys, in Dublin and reports from the Trustee director who visited him regularly.

The Trust Fund established in Father Deane's name was Father Deane Foundation Fund Trust.  It was registered in Australia and is properly regulated by the legislation governing such bodies. Fund already raised, expenses already incurred and a budget targetting the needs identified so far are regularly updated.

Parkinson's Disease is sometimes referred to as a cruel disease.  In fact it is just a disability - albeit cruel. Its severity can be minimized by medicine as well as by stimuli which the patients receive through an active life.  Learn more about how this disease can affect the patient.
