Why was extra fund required for Father Deane when his retirement was already provided for by the Salesian Society?
Father Deane was suffering from Parkinson's Disease and lived in a nursing home. The standard nursing home services covered all his basic daily needs. However, there were still many areas beyond the standard nursing care that we could help to provide so as to make him more comfortable. Inevitably these required extra funding.
Why was an independent trust fund needed to be set up when SLOBA Hong Kong has substantial finance resources?
SLOBA Hong Kong was set up to cater for St Louis Old Boys, students and St. Louis School. Supplementary caring for retired fathers had never been among its objectives. Even assuming Father Deane as an exception, any financial assistance and subsidies to individuals by SLOBA Hong Kong would only be granted on a case by case basis based on the merits of each request and would take some time to materilise after the need arose.
As anyone who had cared for their aged will know, the assistance Father Deane needed could only be identified from close daily on-going care and prompt action.
Who has the authority to make decision of what Father needed and wanted?
It was an issue of practicality rather than authority.
Father was disabled by Parkinson's Disease and had difficulty in expressing himself. Naturally, it was those who stay close to Father who know best of his needs so as to make his life more comfortable despite the disability.
Ever since 1997, Father Deane's close friends in Ireland, Chris and Bosco, had been visiting Father on a regular basis (two to three times a week) to keep him company and to check his condition. Theresa Lee, one of the Trustee’s directors, visited Father three to four times a year and spent two to three weeks with him each time. In Australia, through her constant contact with Chris and Bosco and the nursing staff at the nursing home and her weekly talks with Father, she kept herself and the Trustee fully aware of Father's conditions.
It was through Theresa, Chris and Bosco that Father's condition was being closely monitored and his needs and wants are made known.
How are Father's needs identified and determined?
This was achieved through frequent visits by Father Deane's close friends Bosco, Chris, and Theresa Lee, in coordination with the nursing home and constant communication with Father Foster who was entrusted with the duty of providing funding for Father Deane's retirement.
It seemed the Trust directors visited Father Deane a lot. Are you using up the Trust Fund for travelling?
All expenses were paid for by the visiting directors themselves. The Trust fund was used solely on the care of Father Deane, the legal costs of registering the Trust and the hosting of this website. Detailed expenses is published herein this website.
