Appeal 1999

Dear Fellow St. Louis Old Boy,

Greetings from Australia!

You may already be aware that Father Patrick Deane, our Principal who retired in 1986, has Parkinson's disease and is now living in a nursing home in Dublin.  Having spent almost his entire life in Hong Kong working for St. Louis boys, he is now virtually a stranger in Dublin and his condition has gradually been deteriorating, being lonely and not coping very well with his environment. Although his daily needs have been largely provided for, there are still a lot that we, as St. Louis Old Boys, could do for him to make his life more pleasant.

That is why a group of us (Anthony Liu, Ben Lau, Bernard Yim, Alex Wong and myself) has formed a Father Deane Foundation Fund Trust, Australian registered and regulated, to provide supplementary resources to Father Deane's needs in healthcare and in better quality of life.

As Father Deane was well respected and much loved, we think all Old Boys would not hesitate to help him, especially in this festive season when we remind ourselves of the joy of giving and  sharing.

A website is being prepared to inform all St. Louis Old Boys of the latest conditions of Father Deane and to report the application of the trust fund towards the benefit of Fahter Deane. In less than a month we have already raised over A$5,000 and thanks for Old boys all over the world more is flowing in.  A$1,875 has been applied towards the incorporation of the trust and trustee company and the remaining balance is now being used to provide the following supplementary services to Father:-

  • twice a week physiotherapy to improve Father's blood circulation and mobility
  • twice a week day-care visit by a carer to accompany Father (he needs constant communication with people so as not to indulge himself in his own thoughts and hallucination)
  • purchase of a hand-free telephone headset and payment of a telephone line to facilitate Father's telephone communication with his friends and old boys

To maintain these services and to cater for additional services to Father in the future, continuous additional funding to the trust is urgently needed. For example, as Father was over 70 when he returned to Ireland in 1997, he is eligible only to public health care but excluded from the insurance cover of private health care the provision of which has to be self-funded.

Please donate generously and confidently to the Trust. It is strictly regulated and transparent. The Trust is operated by a trustee company which is guided by the following:-

  • non-profit making
  • solely acts as the trustee to the Trust Fund
  • for holding the income of the Trust Fund for payment for the sole benefit of Father Deane
  • no distribution of income and property among members
  • no payment of salary, remuneration, fees and benefits in money or in kind to officers
