Dearest Paddy,
Rest in peace my brother. If not for you, I would not have had the wonderful years in St. Louis which, despite occasional times of disappointment and sadness, have been filled with happiness.
I am glad that your burdens on this physical earth are over and now you are home bathed in the bliss that is God's Light and Love. Rest and be happy.
Your friend and brother forever,
Danny

I thank our Loving God for having Fr. Patrick Deane in our St. Louis School while I was at my earlier age. The memories of a young Irish priest, the friendly chat before morning classes, the fear of his presence, his first side-burn hair style look... Somehow he helped to shape our young minds. The devotion of his entire life for us was realized only when I grew up to a much mature stage. I pray God for the repose of his soul and grant him whatever he deserves in his eternal life. May Jesus welcomes him to join with our Blessed Virgin Mother, our Holy Spirit, all the Angels and Saints for the eternal banquet with Our Heavenly Father. -

Father Deane was one of those people I would remember fondly for the rest of my life. I am comforted by the fact that he passed away apparently without any suffering. May he rest in peace.

Fr. Deane is one of the most important persons that I have the grace to know, and in youth hood we have been inspired and fostered to become a good citizen. One of the most important comforts he gave to me was: "...that there are many ways to the top..." and that was in the year 1976.
You will certainly be remembered for a long long time. May you rest in God's love and peace.

When Fr Deane first came to St Louis, his imposing posture gained the immediate respect from all pupils. His deep and commanding voice was another quality which helped establish his authority when spoken to. My first impression of Fr Deane was that he was a disciplinarian. I respected him from a distance and admired his football skills when I could. For some strange reason, someone spread the rumour that he was the brother of the late film star James Dean; and I fell for it!

My real encounter with Fr Deane was when I joined the Legion of Mary. He was the Spiritual Director of a senior praesidium and I joined Bridge to Heaven, a junior praesidium. We had the occasional chat when I realised that he was a very kind and attentive person despite his outlook appearance. Still, I hardly had any long conversations with him.

After I left Hong Kong to live in London, I always met up with Fr Deane every time I visited Hong Kong. It was from then that I understood him more as a person and the good deeds he had done for his numerous pupils, especially those from Aberdeen School. Apparently, a large number of Aberdeen pupils joined the Police Force in Hong Kong. Some needed good school reports to warrant a good reference to join the Academy. Fr Deane rescued them by giving them a final chance. They all proved themselves to be his worthwhile protégés. I also realised his love of the motor bike and had an occasion to be his pillion passenger- an excitement that for me once was too many!

After Fr Deane was diagnosed with the wasting disease, I had the greatest privilege of visiting him in his room in St Louis and talked with him. It was tremendous sadness to see him in that way. Yet he showed gracefully how he accepted the challenge. Regrettably, I only had one opportunity to visit him in St Joseph’s. Sadly, he has now left us.

Thank you so much Fr Deane. May God bless you and may you Rest in Peace!
Love & God Bless!

Fr Deane was a shining example of following Jesus in serving others whole-heartedly. He became a priest and devoted himself for the rest of his life to the Salesian way of serving God, in caring for young people and helping them to grow up to their full potentials, to be mature adults. The old boys from St Louis often reflect this and will continue to do so. I shall always remember Father Deane for these and for his friendliness.

For a young boy in the 1970s, Father Deane to me is a towering figure in the school yard. The message from other boys that Father Deane was patrolling the corridors used to send chills down my spine and I tried to stay out of sight of him - at all times. The first time that I met Father Deane after 1973 was around 1992? in Sydney when I was reunited with some of the old boys. It was sad at that time to note the difference in the man.” I was saddened by his frail look, with little trace of the Father that I had in my memory. Over the years, we saw his condition deteriorated. His passing was no surprise but to me, a blessing. May he rest in peace.
