Theresa stayed in Dublin with Father for a month. Here is a brief summary of her reports over this period.
From my observation, Fr has gone down hill quite a bit. Often he had problem in the morning. Either he could not swallow or there were a lot of phelegm clogged up in his throat that he could not cough up. He was very stressed and uncomfortable. He has been a lot quieter than before and not as bright.”
The provincial visited him and Fr Bowman xmas eve and Foster visited him after xmas. Fr Foster gave him a fleecy cardigan.
The Salesians gave Helen a xmas present ..... Helen and Carolyn are very good to Fr and both loves him very much. 1/1/2005
He had a lot of phlegm. He did cough but couldn't spit it out. The nurse suctioned some of it out and I tried to use a towel to scrape it out from his mouth. It took 2 hrs to settle him down. He didn't have breakfast. He was very tired after that. I was very tired too. After the morning session, he was fine. His general health is still very good, it just that his PD condition has gone down hill a lot. It is very important that he has someone with him especially in the morning. 17/1/2005
His main problem was swallowing and in the morning he usually has a lot of phlegm. If he couldn't cough it up or swallowed the wrong way, he would be very agitated and frightened. He could not spit it out. The phlegm got stuck in his throat, (he would not open his mouth to cough,) then he had difficulty breathing. If there was no one around, he may suffocate. Once we got all the phlegm out, he would be OK. Sometimes he swallowed his own saliva the wrong way,and he would choked. He may live on for a long while or he may leave us very quickly if he could not breathe. The most tiring was the morning session, it may take up to 2 hrs to settle him down and both him and me would be exhausted by then. Helen and Carolyn had been doing a great job. 29/1/2005
