Just a short note to let you know that Fr has recovered completely and is looking really well. Helen took a week off last week as she is still very upset about her brother's sudden death. I have been giving Fr a lot of home made soup, and Chinese meal wirth rice. He has gained weight and is looking healthy and strong. He is much more relaxed and is talking a lot more this time. I understand more of what he is saying too. After dinner, he does not want to be put to bed as before and does not want to let me go. I have to say a few times that I need to go home and am feeling tired. He then would let me go. I guess he feels safe and secure when I am around.
I had my birthday here this time and the staff made a birthday card for me and about 10 staff came in Fr's room to sing happy birthday to me and sang in 4 different languages. I was quite touched and moved. Afterall, I am just a visitor, they dont have to go into such trouble to do this.

I rang the carer yesterday. She told me that Fr is recovering. He looked a pit pale, lost some weight but otherwise doing quite well. Sunday he got up for the first time to walk for a little while since the latest set back. I told her to give him some chicken and a bit of stirred fried chicken liver with rice.

Fr was discharged from hosp yesterday (Fri) afternoon. He is now back to the nursing home. The carer rang me just now, her brother passed away suddenly of heart attack. She is going to attend the funeral in her home town and will be away for a few days. She has organised her daughter to stay with Fr today.
Pls say some prayers for her brother, may he rest in peace. Helen is very upset. Even when she has family problem, she still thinks about Fr.

Fr had a diagnostic investigation done on him yesterday. He was lying in bed feeling very drowsy. He had no food and had the drip back on. I hope everything is Ok. Please pray for him.

I will try to talk to the head nurse when I go over this time. Apart from the L-Dopa, he is also on Bromocriptin. May be we can try to reduce this one as they have tried to reduce the Madopar before but it didn't work because he became too stooped. He was bending right over and to the one side, his rib cage and the spine were very tired and painful.

Good to hear Fr Deane is recovering. It sounds like the L-dopa that Fr is on is probably doing a little more harm than good. It may worth a trial in cutting down the dose if he is to resume the medication. I wonder if Theresa can follow up on this as you know the nursing staff well. If Fr. is started on the same old dose again, I can ring his GP and discuss with him

I rang Helen again this morning.
The oxegen mask was taken off him at midday. Xray shows that his swallowing is normal. They gave him semi liquid food which he does not like but took it. He is still on antibiotic drip. He is also having the urine flow test. No blood was found in his urine. No temperature, blood pressure normal. They stopped his Parkinson medication for over 1 day. Helen said she noticed that while he was off his PD medication, he is more alert, not confused, and having a great conversation with her. Both he and Helen were amazed that he can talk so well. I have always maintained that the medication makes him confused and that he is not so mentally senile.
We are very lucky to have Helen. She looks after him well. Cooks for him and sometimes even takes his good clothes home and washes them for him. I rang the hosp myself too and spoke to a nurse. she told me that Fr is quite good, he is sitting up and he will be in the hosp for a few more days for some more tests.

Fr's condition has improved. He has no temperature now and his blood pressure is normal. He has antibiotic injections and is on a drip with no food. He also is on oxygen mask. He was terribly frighten. He held on to the carer's hand refusing to let her go. He finally let her go home about 5.30pm last night.
This morning, the carer went to see him again. He was sitting up and he was looking better. No temperature. No food still. Awaiting to see the consultant and to have an xray to see how he swallows, if the food goes to his stomach or to the lung. Helen told him I have been informed and I will make sure that he is Ok. He then said, "Good" and smiles.
Don't know yet why there is blood in the urine and when he vomitted yesterday.
Will keep you posted

I received a phone call from the nursing home this evening that Fr was admitted to hosp this morning (Irish time). He vomited this morning and had a bit of blood and had a slight temperature. His heart rhythm was a bit fast. He also had a tint of blood in his urine last week. so they sent him to the hosp for observation and investigation. It's a public holiday in Ireland today, so there is no consultant on duty. The consultant will be seeing him tomorrow.I rang the head nurse again just now and she told me that he was diagnosed with pneumonia. He had some blood test and a chest xray. According to the head nurse his condition is quite stable. I rang the carer and asked her to spend more time with him if she can. She went to the hosp to see him once this morning already and told him she will go again after lunch. He felt more relaxed after hearing that. I will keep you informed if I have more news.
