Apr 1997

Father left Hong Kong for Dublin, Ireland just before the historic handover. He was accompanied by brother Edward, Mr. and Mrs. David Leung (an Old Boy) and Theresa Lee.

Upon arrival, there was no vacancy for Father at any nursing home in Dublin.  Mr. and Mrs. David Leung, Theresa Lee and Eileen escorted Father to St John of God's visitor hostel for temporary accommodation pending vacancy in a nursing home.

May 1997

Father was at last admitted to a nursing home "Our Lady's Manor". As no single room was available he was put in a twin room.  Nevertheless, Father was the only patient in the twin room at the time.

Jun 1997

Just before his birthday, another patient was transferred into the room. Father was unable to cope with the company of this new comer who required similar care. He did not sleep well because he could not get used to the snoring of this roommate.

Sep 1997

The other patient was transferred out of his room. Father's condition improved marginally but he was still feeling insecure, as he was worried that another patient would move in. He was also unhappy that some of his personal belongings were missing.  Quite often he forgot that he was in Ireland and talked with people in the nursing home in Cantonese as if he were in Hong Kong.

Nov 1997

Father was finally transferred to a single room. He had lost 20 pounds since his arrival in Ireland.

Dec 1997

Theresa went to visit Father again.  At the suggestion of some Old Boys in the medical profession, she requested the nursing home to carry out a few medical checks for Father to rule out physical problem.  She also  accompanied Father to see the Parkinson's specialist and the dentist. Father's condition improved and remained stable for the next few months after Theresa's visit.
