It is indeed sad to hear that Fr. Deane passed away.

I was in high school when Fr. Deane started to work in St. Louis School. Fr. Deane was the Prefect of Studies when I graduated in 1967. I used to serve his mass at the Blind girl's home on Christmas Eve. It was so long ago now.

The last time I saw him was in the summer of 1996 when I visited Hong Kong.

I am sure he is resting in peace in heaven. We are all sadden by his passing but in the same time glad that he does not have to suffer from his desease anymore.

His is a life well lived and we all owe him so much. He must be the most-beloved person in St. Louis School's history.

p.s the enclosed picture was taken in the summer of 1968.

Father Deane will be remembered by us all. Those who have wholeheartedly helped relieve Father's pain in the past years should receive a vote of thanks from us.

It is sad to hear Fr. Deane passed away.
On the other hand, it must be a relief for Fr. Deane as his free spirit can finally leave his old, tired body and be with the Almighty.
Personally, I remembered as a teenager, I am grateful for the discipline we received from Fr. Deane and the other staff at St. Loius - the slap in the head, face and hand all help.

For me and, I am sure, many of my classmates who were students between 1976-81 or -83, Fr Deane was one of the most vivid symbols of St Louis School and the Catholic faith. May he rest in Heaven. Sincere condolences to his family.

IN REMEMBRANCE  OF  REV FR PATRICK DEANE  S.D.B.
(1926-2007)

THE LORD OUR SHEPHERD
The LORD is my shepherd;
  I have everything I need.
He lets me rest in fields of green grass
  and leads me to quiet pools of fresh water.
He gives me new strength.
He guides me in the right paths,
  as he has promised.
Even if I go through the deepest darkness,
  I will not be afraid, LORD,
  for you are with me.
Your shepherd's rod and staff protect me.
You prepare a banquet for me,
  where all my enemies can see me;
you welcome me as an honoured guest
  and fill my cup to the brim.
I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life;
  and your house will be my home as long as I live.
Psalms 23

The arrival of Rev Fr Patrick Deane at St Louis School in the middle of last century heralded and ushered in a new era during which a solid foundation for the development of our Alma Mater was laid and firmly anchored. Our Alma Mater has since gone from strength to strength with the help from the Good Lord.

The departure of our beloved Rev Fr Patrick Deane marked the successful conclusion of the pilgrimage on earth of a loyal and humble servant to the Good Lord as well as the conclusion of the life-time mission of a doyen in education serving the youths in China in general and our Alma Mater in particular with distinction and dedication.

Time flies and we all pass 50 now.

Without the relaxed discipline we practised in St Louis during Fr Deane's service, we do not know how to live with the confusing world today, as we know even with the strictest legislation, there are still rooms for misbehaviour.

Fr Deane was tough but was more lenient. I recalled at one time one classmate was kicked by him, we were all shocked as we were enjoying our private life and obeying the law of nature, we believed it was a terrible measure that Fr Deane took. Now we know although he exercised more force than needed, this incidence had taught almost the whole school to respect the proper use of public facilities. You never find this technique in any other school.

At one time one classmate was appointed (not elected) prefect, he was so moved that he spent all his time in carrying out his appointed duties as Chairman of Science Society, Editor of Aloysious (wrong spelling?), Officer of Shamrock and a few more. The outcome was he had no time for his studies in Lower Form 6, he was among one of the very few that failed the final examination. With Fr Deane's encouragement, he was allowed to promote to Form 7. He graduated and went to USA for university and when he returned to Hong Kong few years ago, he did not regret his days in St Louis because he was successful in his career with a sense of responsibility and accountability, of course, he had improved his time management too.

General McArthur once said, "an old soldier never dies, he just fades away", Father, you advanced one more step, you inspired thousands of Aloysians, Fr Deane, be rest in peace.
